We have a small farm  just 10 miles south of
Memphis, Tn.  Our goal is to develop a good breeding
program and raise foundation bred Tennessee walking
horses that have retained the true gaits they were originally bred to perform.  A lot of modern walking horses are bred to pace.  Then, they apply pads, weighted shoes, chemicals and artificial devices to the horses' hooves and legs and all this paraphernalia  enables the horses to perform a proper, although grossly exaggerated running walk.  Without the added weight, a lot of modern bred show horses can't perform a running walk.
However, there are still some breeders around the country who are dedicated to preserving the rare old bloodlines of our breed.  These breeders raise horses that perform the proper gaits of a walking horse without mechanical and chemical manipulation.  I bought two of my horses from one of those breeders and there is a difference.  Some of those breeders have formed a group called the Tennessee Walking Horse Heritage Society .  I strongly agree with their mission.
I'm not saying that there are no modern bred horses who perform proper gaits naturally without weight and chains.  I own some horses with modern bloodlines and I'm thankful that they have very good gaits.  I just believe the chances of getting a pacer instead of a natural walker is much higher with modern show breeding.
I would like to see our breed get back to its original purpose.  The original purpose was to breed pleasure horses with smooth, natural, inbred gaits (flat walk, running walk and canter) and great temperaments and endurance.  Good temperaments and endurance are also missing in a lot of modern show horses.
My horses are trained for trail riding and showing in flat shod and versatility classes. I use natural horsemanship methods.  I train my horses to negotiate obstacles found on the trail.  That includes being able to back, side pass, and pivot on their fore and hind quarters.
I also believe in Natural Hoof Care .  All of my horses are trimmed monthly using natural hoof care techniques. It is much more healthy for the horses than shoes and I like the added traction that bare hooves provide.
